It pays to spend a few minutes of your digital life to learn a little bit about organisations that are in charge of managing the basic underlying identities of the Internet - the IP networks and addresses.

All devices on the internet rely on them to find out who is where, so data can be delivered the the right party.

# Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)

The internet identities of whole world is handled by only 5 organisations.

# Autonomous System Number

Internet's core data traffic routing protocol, the [Border Gateway Protocol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Gateway_Protocol) (BGP), uses [Autonomous System Number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_system_(Internet)) to identity different networks.

There are currently about 92000 organisations with ASN, about 77000 have only one ASN, [88.io](http://88.io) is one of the remaining about 15000 organisations that have more than one ASN.

A ranking of global ASN is available here:

> **[AS Rank: A ranking of the largest Autonomous Systems (AS) in the Internet.](https://asrank.caida.org/)**

# Your ASN

To find out the [Autonomous System Number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_system_(Internet)) of your current IP address, simple click on
[https://id.88.io/ip/](https://id.88.io/ip/)

Currently [88.io](http://88.io) is using the following [Autonomous System Number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_system_(Internet)) range:

1. AS133758 - Public ASN for normal unicast traffic
2. AS133175 - Public ASN for [anycast traffic](https://discuss.88.io/t/network-anycast-service/268)
3. AS65000 - Private ASN for development
4. AS65001 - Private ASN for aunsw mesh

There is an official range of ASN reserved for [Private Use](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc6996/):

- **16-bit:** AS64512 - AS65534
- **32-bit:** AS4200000000 - AS4294967294

Currently [88.io](http://88.io) has reserved:

- AS65000 to AS65500 for [Citizen Ecosystems](https://citizenecosystem.com)
- AS4210000000 to AS4290000000 for [Area Entities](https://areaentity.com)

They are assigned from the lowest number towards the highest number on a first come first served basis.

# BGP

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) plays an important role in the functioning of Virtual Private Mesh.

# IP Address

## IP Spoofing

IP addresses can be spoofed for DoS attack, to help identify networks that do not perform source address filtering, [CAIDA Spoofer](https://www.caida.org/projects/spoofer/) can be ran on all our mesh nodes if the owner enables it.
