Home Station 24.1

Basic Home Station

This low cost Mini PC design meets the MINIMUM specifications for new Home Stations. This minimum specification is a recommendation for newly purchased computers for use as Home Stations, you can turn most old computers below the recommended minimum specifications into Home Stations.

This 24.1 design is available under many brands and models with different CPU, RAM and DISK configurations:

NOTE: those models above with more powerful cpu (e.g. N4000) and more storage (e.g. 8GB ram or 128 GB disk) are most likely too expensive (as of 2024-05-08 the total price including tax and shipping for Basic Home Station should be US$99 or below), so they might NOT have the required "price performance ratio" to be recommended as a Basic Home Station.

We will be using the SOYO M2 model (with N3350 cpu, 6GB ram, 64 GB disk) as an example for a design that does have the required "price performance ratio" for the Home Station 24.1.

1. Low Price

As of 2024-05-08, the SOYO M2 model with N3350 cpu and 64GB disk was just AU$78.04 on Aliexpress (AU$87.18 including Australian tax and shipping to Australia).

The above online deal even comes with a bundled 128GB MicroSD card in that low price, enabling you to optionally earn some Interval Coins by selling that 128GB storage capacity to Infinite Disk.

Four rubber legs needs to be removed to access the four screws holding the top and bottom of the case together.

3. Power

No idea the power supply design used nor who manufactured the bundled 12V 2A DC power supply. Not worth cracking it open for a detailed review, as buyers will (and should) use a locally approved 12V power supply.

Not much printed externally on this power supply, contrast the limited information provided here with the large amount of information printed on the the Home Station 24.2 power supply.

The device is passively cooled, so will benefit from our vertical wall deployment strategy. To make it standup we can transfer the 4 rubber legs on the "original bottom" to the side of the case with the VGA port.

It is possible to just reuse the original glue remaining on those rubber legs after removal to secure those legs onto their new positions, without needing to add extra glue yourself.

Note this design is NOT stable by itself, you need to position the closed side of the case without holes (the side with the SOYO logo) against a supportive structure (like a wall), the opposite side of the case has ventilation slots and should be facing away from the structure.

The VGA side of the case has been selected to be the "new" bottom due to the orientation of the heatsink fins, allowing hot air to rise up easily. Also the new vertical deployment does NOT reduce WiFi or Bluetooth performance.

  • the wall provides stability by supporting the closed off "logo" side of the case
  • the air gap between the desk and wall supplies a large volume of cool air
