iOS AirPort Utility

AirPort Utility

You should run the Apple AirPort Utility app for about 60 seconds so it can collect enough data (but NOT more than 90 seconds as that will be too much data) to create an survey file as output.

We are NOT aware of any open sourced iOS app that will tell you the mac address of access points around you.

1. Usage

  1. Install App
  2. Collect Data
  3. Import Data

2. Android

This app is for iOS, for Android please use:

Install App

AirPort Utility app is available for iPhone and iPad and can be downloaded from the App Store.

Configuration

Once installed, go to Settings > AirPort Utility to turn on the Wi-Fi Scanner.

Collect Data

Open the AirPort Utility app. If prompted select Allow.

Click on the wifi_scan_button button and then click on the scan_button button to start scanning.

AirPort Utility scans all available bands at four-second intervals. The scan duration can be changed by moving the slider. Please change the slider to 60 seconds (the default is Continuous)

File Export

After the scanning has stopped, the result can be exported to a local storage or remotely to iCloud by pressing on the upload_button button (the exported file is in .txt format)

Import Data

Click on the location pin, select Attach -> Survey and browse to the location where the file is stored.

If successful, the location pin will have the WiFi detected displayed in the format of "WiFi SSID_MAC Address" or "WiFi SSID_Activity Marker" and followed by the RSSI signal strength.

In the example below:

  • accessnode0_2200D7528204 -79, where accessnode0 is the WiFI SSID followed by 2200D7528204 which is the Activity Marker with RSSI of -79
  • exetel-wifi2_10FEED50C5E1 -57, where exetel-wifi2 is the WiFi SSID followed by 10FEED50C5E1 which is the MAC Address with RSSI of -57

For Community Area Alias only

If Survey is selected in the Publish Pins menu, the post will also be displayed.
