# Network Firewall

All compute assets

For the Private Cyberspace 20.12 release, the default [network gateway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_(telecommunications)) software used in [Virtual Private Mesh (VPM)](https://virtualprivatemesh.com) is based on [OpenWrt](https://openwrt.org/).

The VPM Network Gateway operates as a component of Dynamic Alias's unified security providing substantially , traditional [interface and zone](https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/ios-firewall/98628-zone-design-guide.html) based network security (e.g. stateful inspection firewall, intrusion prevention system etc.) can also be used as an additional layer of protection.

Some open sourced network gateways with firewall security inlcudes:

# Foomuuri

Foomuuri is not as feature rich as firewalls we recommended [previously](https://discuss.88.io/t/network-firewall/892/2), but it is actively being developed, so can only get better.

# Legacy

Some firewall software are no longer being maintained. These are supported but NOT recommended.

We have been using Configserver Security and Firewall for years, but the company behind it has recently shutdown:
