Anti-Static Strap
1. Before Use
1.1. Anti-Static Strap Safety
When you first received an anti-static strap, measure the resistance of the anti-static strap to make sure there is a an in-built resistor to protect you from any large current flow (e.g. 1 mega ohms).
Most straps DO have a resistor inside, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
1.2. Anti-Static Strap Types
Try to get an anti-static strap that can be unplugged:
So you can:
- use it to connect to an anti-static mat
- replace the wrist band if it is loose or dirty
2. Usage
2.1. Ground the Chassis
Before unpacking ANY other components (e.g. remove them from their anti-static bags), create a grounded environment by attaching the power supply and chassis (the computer case) FIRST.
Make sure that the power supplied is screwed tightly onto the chassis, so that the power supply ground (the power supply case) has a good enough connection to ground the chassis.
2.2. Ground the Power Supply
To ensure that there a ground connection to the building electrical ground by making sure that:
- the power supply is OFF
- the power cable still plugged IN
Use the switch on the power supply NOT the switch on the chassis to turn power off.
2.3. Attach to Power Supply
Attach the anti-static strap to the power supply case directly (if it is NOT painted or has special ground points), otherwise attach to an area of the chassis that has electrical connection to the power supply case and is as close to the power supply case as possible.
