Democracy

Arrow's Impossibility Theorem

Arrow got a Nobel prize for showing that if there are 3 or more choices, it is NOT possible to satisfy all 5 conditions of democracy using rank voting system:

  1. Unanimity
  2. No Dictators
  3. Unrestricted Domain
  4. Transitivity
  5. Independence of irrelevant alternatives

There are problems with the types of democracy practised by some "western" democracy:

  1. First Past the Post - winner takes all - can only vote for one
  2. Preferential voting - ranked-choice voting - order in preference more than one
  3. Condorcet -
