Location App

Dynamic Power Save

OwnTracks software has 2 major modes:

  • Move mode - accurate but use a lot of power
  • Significant mode - saves power but inaccurate

iOS

Starts in Move (monitoring: 2, adapt: 10). After roughly 10 minutes without meaningful movement, iOS automatically reduces to Significant. When it next reports in Significant mode, the server sends Move again and recentres +follow.

Android

Starts in Significant (monitoring: 1). Significant-motion detection, leaving +follow, or speed ≥5 km/h causes the server to switch it to Move for about 10 minutes. It then returns to Significant on a subsequent non-moving report after that window. The 15-minute ping is the fallback.

Summary

Mode keeps changing in a loop

iOS: Move → Significant → report/movement → Move
Android: Significant → motion/exit/speed → Move → Significant
