Citizen Patent

The current patent system is broken, Citizen Patent is our attempt to fix it.

Based on Fact Asset, it covers everything from intellectual property to commercialisation.

Protecting Your Work (and ours)

Transitioning from a passive Compute User to an active Compute Owner means you now have intellectual assets you need to protect and manage.

Fact Asset provides a way of earning income from your compute and data, but since you are the owner, you can also complement it or replace it with your own protection e.g. with traditional technologies like licenses and patents.

Improving on Dual Licensing

Dual licensing means the possibility of having both a commercial and a non-commercial license for the same product. Traditional Dual Licensing uses a restricted non-commercial license e.g. strong copyleft license like AGPL3 to push people to pay for the commercial licenses.

Copy Left Licensing

For software development we try to leverage as much existing source-available software as possible. In cases where there is no existing source-available software, we developed original software with dual source-available licenses (open source, non-commercial, commercial etc.).

To provide maximum flexibility and ensure maximum innovation, most Team Compute technologies are available with multiple source-available licenses, you are free to pick which license is best for your situation.

For example, the ONE CLICK installable Private Cyberspace software is DUAL licensed:

  1. an OSI approved EUPL-1.2 license for general use cases
  2. a commercial source-available license for special use cases

For people who want to support OSI, they can build their Private Cyberspaces completely with OSI approved Compute Modules, while others (e.g. defence departments) can mix and match Compute Modules with different licenses freely.

We believe this multiple license feature will encourage people with different views on Intellectual Property to work and grow together with all source code available to be viewed by all.

Traditional Patents

We agree with the EFF that the patent system is broken, but currently (in year 2026) there is no good practical and realistic alternative, so we have obtained traditional patent protection to prevent exploitation by the big techs.

We respect EFF's Defend Innovation attempt to fix the patent system, but we believe Fact Asset will be able to protect and fuel innovation substantially better than any legislation.

Open Source

1. Open Source Initiative

Unless for some extraordinary reasons, all Private Cyberspace related technologies should offer at least one Open Source Initiative (OSI) approved license as part of its Licensing Options Program.

2. Open vs Free (rant)

While we support the OSI and its work, we do not agree with its use of the word "Open" instead of "Free".

We believe what OSI calls "Open Source" is actually "Free Source" as defined by the Free Software Foundation.

"Open Source" should be used for "Source-Available" but the "Open Source" horse has already bolted, so it is a bit late to close the stable door now :(

Red Hat vs GPLv2

Full Release

All 88.io technologies will be released in full to the citizens of every country. We are committed to providing maximum transparency while maintaining protection of our intellectual properties before individual citizen ecosystems are establish in each country.

Early Access

Until the local citizen ecosystem has been established in a country, the government of each country can nominate up to 100 engineers to have early access to all 88.io technologies including detailed source code, circuit diagrams and change logs.

The engineers can inspect the technologies (e.g. for backdoors) or develop those technologies further (e.g. localisation for their country). However they are NOT allow to disclose any of those technologies to people that are no part of the early access program.

All improvements made during the early access program must be contributed back to the 88.io global technology repository.

Independent Release

Local citizen ecosystem owns the 88.io technologies in form of patents in that country. It can release the technology and any improvements it made in any form it sees fit.

It is recommended that major improvements made by individual citizen ecosystems be contributed back to the 88.io global technology repository, so other citizen ecosystems worldwide may benefit.

Non-Commercial

We are looking at adding an extra non-commercial license in the future to enable limited distribution of some software that is not suitable for with the does not fit into OSI nor into commercial license.

You can use, distribute, modify all our software running on your phone or computer free of charge subject to the Personal Console License.

Personal Console includes the Web App which runs in web browsers and associated Helper Apps (e.g. 88.io Android App).

The source code is published publicly at https://repository.88.io for security audits, feature enhancements, bug fixes etc.

There is no restriction on usage but there are restrictions on distribution and modification.

If you distribute our software to others, you do not have to tell us who nor how many of them, but we do want to know your contact information, so we can inform you of any urgent matters (e.g. security patches) affecting our software.
