Both China digital ID and Europe digital ID have adopted the 3-party W3C Identity Model of an Issuer (government) certifying data of a Holder (you) for a Verifier (shop):

While they do provide their citizens with an alternative Decentralised identity platform to the Centralised identity platforms like Google and Tencent, Team Alias can add substantial value in many ways:

Europe

The European Digital Identity (EUDI) can be rolled out faster, cheaper and with enhanced functions by leveraging off the Citizen Compute movement.

A major benefit of having mass compute ownership is the ability of individual citizens to come together impromptuly to assist the government in initiatives that requires a lot of resources, like forming a flash mob for large scale compute projects - we called this movement Citizen Compute.

The Citizen Compute EUDI Pilot aims to complement the 4 official pilots by providing direct high quality feedbacks to the European Commission from the EU citizens at the grassroots level.

Due to the easy ONE CLICK activation, we hope to have more EU citizens participating in the Citizen Pilot than all official pilots combined by the first production release of Citizen Owner.

EUDI Improvements

Although the EUDI concept is sounded we believe there are more secure, faster and cheaper ways of delivering EUDI if the EU citizen is a Compute Owner instead of a Compute User.

1. User Control

More importantly, implementing EUDI using Compute Owner technology enables the delivery on the Primary Objective of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) - that is to allow Europeans to be "in control" of their own online interactions and presence.

While the existing EUDI implementation does transfer the "control" from one service provider to many service providers (thus increasing the separation of power to protect the EU citizens), the EUID can deliver much more benefit if the "control" is transfer to the EU citizens themselves.

2. Owner Control

We shall go through all 14 building blocks of EUDI (as labelled in the diagram below), to indicate how Citizen Ownership can deliver dramatically better outcomes to the EU citizens.

1. Conformity Bodies

With their own compute power, all Compute Owners can analyse and reject any non-conforming transactions immediately in realtime, there is no need for Conformity Bodies to perform numerous individual certifications of EUDI Wallets or Qualified Trusted Services anymore.

Conformity Bodies simply standardise on a set of acceptable practices and the Compute Owner's Citizen Ecosystem will reject any transaction that does not conform automatically - it is like giving the Conformity Bodies the ability to perform realtime certification on every transaction!

2. Supervisory Bodies

Supervisory Bodies can monitor the performance of EUDI directly in realtime with the highest clarity, without going through the opacity and delay with service providers.

Uniquely, Compute Owners can optionally exposure extra statistical data to Supervisory Bodies as well as offering drill-down ability for more detailed data under the protection of Fuzzy Blocks.

Supervisory Bodies now have access to the Maximum data of allowed by EACH citizen instead of the Minimum data required from ALL citizens.

3. Other Providers

While service providers can be use for many tasks, Trust is one fundamental service that is best performed by the citizens themselves.

Compute Owners' Community Clusters are used to deliver any "other" trust services securely at scale under the owners' full control.

1. Single Point of Failure

While concentration of function and data onto just 2 mobile platforms is great for controlling citizen behaviours and selling their data, it is very poor for the citizen's privacy and security.

Putting the EUDI Wallet on the citizen's phones as a mobile app creates a single point of failure.

1.1. Non-Stop Security Bugs

Putting all your most valuable data (EUDI intent to store almost everything from your health records to education results) on platforms which have proved to have been hacked and have still NEW security bugs appearing EVERY single month does not make any sense.

1.2. No Safe State

Mobile phones are normally exposed online for most parts of the day, interacting constantly in the background with internet sites that the phone owner have no idea of.

To make things worse, thousands of new mobile apps are download and installed everyday by EU citizens on thousands of different phone hardware and operating system version combinations.

With the constant changes, there is no steady state to be analysed and established as safe. It is IMPOSSIBLE to perform security assurance testing to any credible level.

And we have not even mentioned possible bugs with the EUDI Wallets themselves (which are being developed independently with different quality by different countries).

1.3. Physical Risk

As more and more data is put on the phone, it become more valuable target for attack, not just through the internet but also physically.

With the phone being use for everything (including EUID Wallet), having physical control of the phone, means having control of all the application and data on it.

  • Unlocking a phone by just pointing it at a victim's face is easy and less violent that trying to force out a password that might be forgotten.

  • Sending a SMS code to the SAME device that has just supplied a password, is poor multi-factor authentication.

The improvement in physical security of mobile phones and their owners have NOT catch up with the increasingly important roles it play and concentration of data it has stored on it.
